Being at the intersection of Asia, Afghanistan has seen many different peoples cross its terrirtory. An important point of passage along the Silk Road in the Age of Antiquity, famous conquerors who wished to invade India were forced to cross it: Cyrus the Great, Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and Emperor Babur.
A country that has always been unstable and frequently at war, Afghanistan has seen many of its historical monuments damaged and destroyed over the years, such as the two statues of Buddha in the province of Bâmiyân in 2001.
