The main island, Tutuila, of volcanic origin, boasts a superb rain forest, well preserved thanks to the creation in 1988 of a 400,000 hectare national park, in which you can walk along pleasant hiking paths. The capital city, Pago Pago, is first of all a fishing harbour, dedicated to tuna preserving, quite polluted and not very welcoming. But the city is located on the site of the old crater of a volcano, which you can go up to by cable-car, offering a spectacular panorama from its summit. In the north of the island, a walk in the mountains, from the village of Fagassa, leads the way to the site of Forbidden Bay, renowned as one of the most beautiful in the South Pacific Ocean.
