On a promontory dominating the valley of Orient, the church of Sant Joan of Caselles is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of Andorran Roman churches. It dates back to the 10th century, though some of its stonework dates back further, and houses paintings from the same era among which is a stunningly beautiful altarpiece. Many beautiful surprises also await you upon entering the churches of Sant Romà de Les Bons, Sant Marti de La Cortinada, Sant Climent de Pal, Santa Coloma, Sant Cerni de Nàgol, Sant Miquel d'Engolasters and also stepping onto the bridges of Margineda and Sant Antoni. Just over a mile from Canillo, Meritxell is the 'Lourdes' of Andorra and welcomes flocks of believers to worship on the 8th September every year. Destroyed by a fire, a new building, the work of Ricardo Bofill, has been erected not far from its ruins.
