end of the 7th century BC: the Armenians settled in Ourartou.
301 AD: Christianity became the state religion. From the 11th to the 20th century: Armenia suffered several invasions: Turkish, Seljuk, Mongol, Mameluke, Persian, and Ottoman. 1915-1916: genocide of the Armenians by the Turks.
1918: the first independent Armenian Republic was proclaimed.
1922: Armenia was annexed by the USSR.
7 December 1988: The Spitak Earthquake kills at least 25,000 people.
1990: victory of the National Armenian Movement following legislative elections. Vazken Manoukian becomes Prime Minister.
16 October 1991: Levon Ter Petrossian elected President of the Armenian Republic.
21 September: referendum. Armenia proclaims its independence.
1992: admission of the Republic of Armenia to the UN. From 1988 to 1993: war of Karabakh and birth of the Autonomous Republic of Karabakh.
May 1994: the Armenians go into the lead at Karabakh - signing of a ceasefire.
5 July 1995: new constitution for the Armenian Republic.
September 1996: riots break out in front of Government Buildings. February 1998: Levon Ter Petrossian resigns.
30 March 1998: Robert Kotcharianest is elected President of the Republic of Armenia.
12 May 2000: Andranik Markaryan becomes Prime Minister. 18 January 2001: recognition of the Armenian genocide by the French government (the law was passed on 30 January).
5 March 2003: Robert Kotcharian re-elected. 2008: Prime Minister of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan becomes president.
