The Federal Government built Canberra, the Australian capital, at the beginning of the century on the road from Sydney to Melbourne (Hume Hwy): nicknamed the "garden city", it has a few interesting monuments that are worth seeing, such as the new Parliament House, a spectacular edifice topped by a 260 feet high metallic mast. Take a bike ride around Lake Burley Griffin, and discover the Australian Institute of Sport. Visit the National Gallery of Australia (11 galleries containing almost 70,000 works, including an important collection of Aborigine art).
