The Great Walks of Queensland is an Australian government initiative introduced to provide well-maintained paths for hikers.. The paths provide an opportunity to explore Australia's varied landscapes, some of which are now listed among Unesco's cultural heritage sites. At present, there are eight routes, with a further two planned to open in 2010: Fraser Island, the Gold Coast Hinterland, the Mackay Highlands, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, the Wet Tropics, Carnarvon Great Walk, Whitsunday Ngaro Sea Trail and finally the Whitsunday Great Walk and Conway State Forest. The Gold Coast Hinterland walk, for example, is a 34 mi walk running alongside Lamington and the Springbrook National Park. Along the way you will come across many waterfalls, volcanic landscapes, tropical forests and a panoramic view of Numinbah Valley. Whatever your age or physical condition, you will be sure to find a suitable section, because each path includes shorter, easier sections as well as half- or whole-day hikes. More experienced walkers can even keep trekking for up to eight days. All of the routes are described on the Queensland government website, .
