Although the kangaroo and the koala are emblems of Australia, the latter even being protected by strict laws on the preservation of its natural habitat, various other species populate the Australian continent. The emu, a cousin of the ostrich, wins the award for size, but not originality, as almost 530 of the 700 species of birds that populate Australia are indigenous. The famous sea crocodiles can be seen in the north, and the white shark in the south. Careless swimmers please take note. There are 360 species of lizard, 140 of snakes, and almost 1,500 species of spiders.
