In the absence of predators, marsupials took over Australian territory. There are forty varieties of the most famous of them, the kangaroo, from the kangaroo rat to the giant kangaroo, wallabies and wallaroos. Koalas and wombats also belong to this large family of marsupials, together with tree-dwelling species, such as the cuscus, which resembles a small lemur, and shares the limelight with the possums and other flying squirrels.
