The Whitsunday archipelago can be reached from Airlie Beach and Shutel Harbour: This is one of the Queensland 'musts', despite considerable tourism. These 74 non coral islands offer gorgeous beaches, excellent access to the coral barrier (Bait Reef) and one of the most beautiful areas for sailing of the whole reef. Further to the north, the most spectacular reefs to be found leaving from Townsville are Flinders Reef and Yongala Reef; Ribbon Reefs and Cod Reef are accessible from Lizard Island or Cairns.
