Although the west is less populated and travelled to than the east, it is well worth taking a trip there. A journey to the north of Perth will allow you to discover the incredible Pinnacles desert in the Nambung National Park, and the majestic canyon in Kalbarri National Park. Wave Rock awaits you to the south of Perth, resembling an immense static and mineralised wave (this rock of 49 feet high is almost 360 feet long); or the pink lake and the wine-producing area of Margaret River, a charming village set in a forest of giant karris. Inland, the town of Kalgoorlie-Boulder will plunge you back into the era of the gold rush. This small town, which is quite exuberant, is today the oldest exploited Australian mining town. The Purnululu-Bungle Bungles National Park (in the Kimberley massif, to the north), has the most impressive rock formations in Australia: a vast expanse of imposing yellow-orange domes daubed with dark bands and split by deep gorges.
