Although beer is the national Austrian beverage, the country also has excellent vineyards. Wine generally accompanies a meal. The speciality is the Viennese escalope. If you are tempted by having a culinary adventure, try Tafelspitz (loin of beef covered in a horseradish sauce), Leberknöde Suppe (soup containing small balls of semolina), the Wild (saddle of venison with stewed cranberries) or Salzburger Nnockerin (a creamy soufflé in the shape of a mountain). As the pastries are also famous, you should taste the Sacher Torte (the famous chocolate cake), Apfelstrudel (an apple and cinnamon pie), Mohntorte (poppy tart) and Buchtel (cream brioche).
