The village of Hallstatt, known for its ossuary, is registered as World Heritage by Unesco for its houses built on piles that are tucked around the lake. The site has been inhabited since 1,000 BC: this period, corresponding to the Iron Age, also saw a flourishing civilisation develop there. The city also became rich due to the salt mines located around it (Salzbergwerk). At the time, salt was sold at prices for gold. Today, the village is undeniably picturesque. It is pleasant to stroll around its small streets, or to take a ride in a boat on the lake.
