 Historical dates

11th century:The old Iranian province is invaded by Seljuk Turks.
1828: Iran gives northern Azerbaijan to the Russians.
1918: Proclamation of the Independent Republic.
1920: Occupation by the Red Army.
1922: Integration of Azerbaijan into the USSR.
1923-24: The autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan and Nagorno-Karabakh are united with Azerbaijan.
1936: Proclamation of the Federal Republic of Azerbaijan.
1990: The first free elections are won by the communists.
1991: Independence and admittance to the CIS.
1992: The nationalist Azerbaijani opposition takes power.
1993: The Nagorno-Karabakh and the southwest of the country are controlled by the Armenian army. Gueidar Aliev (communist party) is elected President.
2003: Ilham Aliyev is elected President. The Prime Minister is Artur Rasizade.
27 July 2005: A private airline takes a commercial non-Turkish flight towards the north of Cyprus for the first time in 30 years. Until now, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has only been connected abroad via Turkey, which is the only country that recognised it.
