The Apcheron Peninsula projects into the Caspian Sea above Baku. It is home to a number of fortresses from the Middle Ages, built in the 14th century by the Shirvan Shahs to protect themselves from sea attacks. The best preserved fortresses are Ramana, Nardaran and Mardakyany. At Ramana, you can also visit the ruins of old oilfields, where Zoroastrian fire worshippers practiced their ritual dances. These dances involved jumping over the flames that shot up from the ground soaked with natural gas. The tip of this peninsula is a natural reserve.
