Nassau, the capital of New Providence, is the compulsory place of passage for most tourists going to the Bahamas. An active and flourishing city, there are casinos, banks and shops, and a port full of cruise ships that set down hoards of tourists daily. The city is not big, and having done some shopping on Bay Street or at the Straw Market, you can drive along its streets bordered by colonial villas in a barouche. Go to the changing of the guard in front of the governmental palace (Duke Street), which takes place every Saturday morning at 10:00 AM. Visit the exhibition on the Junkanoo on the Prince George jetty ($1 from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM). Explore Fort Fincastle, built in 1789 and whose tower, which rises almost 230 feet above sea level, offers the highest viewpoint of the whole island.
