The archipelago of the Bahamas has nearly 700 islands scattered over a vast area, from Florida to the coasts of Cuba, about 744 miles. Out of the two major tourist centres, Nassau and Grand Bahama, where mass tourism has indeed left its mark (although in a relatively smaller scale), there is in fact a multitude of beaches opening onto quiet and beautiful islands that make everyone's dream come true and with hotels ranging from the discreet guest house to the luxury hotel. The "outer islands" are the other face of the Bahamas, intimate face and totally exotic. It is fascinating to view the Exuma archipelago with 365 islands, famous for its traditional boat racing and its places of peaceful popular anchorage for sailors. Or the island of Abacos, the Kingdom of navigation and cabotage, which stretches over 130 miles south-east of Grand Bahama. The Abacos have superb marinas and some of the most beautiful beaches in the Bahamas, including Treasure Cay. The Biminis, near Florida, remains one of the favorite destinations for lovers of fishing and offer beautiful diving spots. Andros, the largest island of the Bahamas, located just to the west of New Providence, also offers beaches, one of the longest coral reefs in the world (the third largest), a great variety of submarine landscapes and caves the size of cathedrals. On the other side of Andros, Eleuthera will fascinate you with its magnificent coastline and its quiet coves, where the water is glittering in incredibly profound blue-green. Accessible by ferry (2 hours) from Nassau, but also by plane (with 5 minutes by sea shuttle), the charming Harbour Island, north-east of Eleuthera, seduces lovers of hotel of charm and good restaurants. A true sightseeing place, Pink Sands, the main beach of Harbour is covered with pink sand.
