In an ideal position on the route between the Middle East and Asia, Bahrain has been influenced by many nations, including the Portuguese. These great navigators left behind impressive traces of the time they spent here in the 16th Century. Many forts still remain in the kingdom, especially near to Manama, now enjoying protected status and offering free entry to visitors. The most impressive is, without doubt, Bahrain Fort, or Qal`at al-Bahrain, which was built in 1522 and has been very well restored.
