In order to learn about and understand the importance, wealth and great history of this little kingdom, the excellently curated national museum cannot be ignored. Exhibit after exhibit is displayed in various spacious, bright rooms spread over two levels and the handicraft includes jewellery and textiles; there is a room on pearl farming, including the work, tools and traditional wooden fishing boats (dhows); the superb archaeological remains from Dilmun (including tombs from the Bronze Age civilisation), and reconstructions of daily life; Korans; models explaining Bahraini architecture, etc. Even the outside of the museum is interesting, with its contemporary sculptures and a dhow set in the midst of a group of traditional Arab houses. Entrance to the Bahrain National Museum, which is open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, costs 500 fils.
