In the north, Bahrain offers very beautiful landscapes of yellow and ochre fortresses, dominating the desert and the sea. In the desert, the palm groves protect the mosques from the hot wind. These orchards growing orange and lemon trees are havens of cool. At the centre, near to A'ali, the tombs of the oldest necropolis in the world mingle with oil wells drawing from the sub-soil, the country's fortune. Around Manama, modernity and luxury nibble away at the desert. The traditional tents of nomads and camels lie side by side with impeccably maintained 4x4s and skyscrapers.
