15th Century: The Portuguese are credited with discovering the island, en route to Brazil. They name it 'Os Barbados' after the fig-trees that resembled beards.
1492:The Spanish arrive and take over the island, imposing slavery on the local Carib Indians
1625-1644: Captian John Powell lands on the island and so begins the colonisation by the English. Cultivation of tobacco and cotton until the sugar cane industry developed
1834: Slavery abolished
1966: Barbados gains independence but maintains ties to the British monarch and is a member of the Commonwealth
