Bruges As the capital of West Flanders and known as the "Venice of the North", Bruges is popular among lovers for its romantic setting. Richard Semik/ age fotostock
Close to the sea, the charming Bruges hides behind its ramparts. Its canals from the Middle Ages run alongside gothic architectural masterpieces and little streets with old gabled houses. The belfry, halls and Markt form a historical ensemble in the centre of the town. The Main Square is bordered by cafés. Right at the top, having climbed the 366 steps of the tower and discovered the 47 bells of the clock, you will admire the view of the town, lost in the polders. Then go for a ride in a barouche or a walk along the peaceful canals, decorated with small, charming, and inaccessible places. The gothic Notre-Dame church holds the "Virgin and child" by Michelangelo, sculpted in Carrara marble in the 14th century. The Saint-Sauveur 12th century cathedral bears the arms of the knights of the golden fleece in its choir with 48 gothic stalls. The Beguine convent, far away from the excitement, offers a walk in a green setting. The Halve brewery offers a visit to its brewing rooms and fermenting vats, together with a tasting.
