Narrow streets, wide avenues, gabled houses, modern residences, Brussels has a good balance for a capital on a human scale. Its Main Square, which is exceptional, spreads its numerous cafés and brasseries amongst the baroque houses of the guilds. It includes the town hall, a building constructed in the purest gothic style, dating from the 13th and 15th centuries. There is a statue of Saint Michael in gilded copper at the top of its more than 295 feet tower. Close by, you will find the Manneken-Pis. The sculpture of this little fellow goes back to the 17th century, and legend tells that he put out the lighted fuse of a bomb with this natural gesture. Go and walk in the little Bouchers Street in the historical centre, which is bordered by lively restaurants. You must not miss the stained-glass windows of the Saints-Michael-and-Gudule gothic cathedral. To the south of the city, Saint-Gilles and Ixelles have various buildings in the art nouveau style. Also see: The Notre-Dame de la Cambre abbey, which is located south of the ponds, for its main courtyard from the 18th century and its 14th century church. North of the city, the Atomium symbolises Brussels. Made for the Universal Exhibition of 1958, it represents a molecule of lead crystal that has been enlarged 165 thousand times. It dominates the Heisel plateau from the top of its 328 feet.
