Canals and waterways criss-cross the student town of Gand. The Comtes castle, a fortress from the 12th century, borders the waters of the Lys. Gand's reputation is based on the Saint-Bavon cathedral, built at the initiative of Charles the Fifth. Inside, the reredos "the Adoration of the mystic lamb", a work by the Van Eyck brothers, commands respect as the major work in Flemish painting. You can see the town and its surroundings from the top of the tower. Close by, the Saint-Nicolas church belfry is more than 295 feet high. It is joined to the cloth hall and its bell tower with more than 50 bells.
