The most original land fauna is represented by the mantled howler monkeys that form a large colony in the Bermudian Landing Community Babboon Sanctuary, 26 miles to the west of Belize City. This protected species is only found in Belize. Mantled howler monkeys are black, and spend their time in the trees, communicating with each other by a distinctive loud barking whoop.
