Lamanai is 36 miles south of Orange Walk. This ancient Mayan city was amongst the largest after the pre-classic period. A pyramid 111 feet high remains that has been partly cleared of vegetation. You can also visit a temple that has conserved its carved bas-reliefs. The items found on the site have been put together in a small museum at the entrance: it exhibits astonishing pottery and silex tools.
