Altun Ha is 34 miles to the north of Belize City. This group of Mayan ruins includes several temples that are spread around two squares. The most impressive structure is the Temple of the Masonry Altars. This dates from the 7th century. After religious ceremonies, copal resin was burned here and jade objects were "sacrificed" by being broken. There are several tombs in the foundations of the temple, of which some have yielded considerable evidence of Mayan craftwork: shell necklaces, pottery, and ceremonial silex.
