Xunantunich is 5.5 miles west of San Ignacio. Its most impressive building, El Castillo, is 131 feet. The other remains of the site are organised around three squares, and notably include engraved stellae. The city flourished until the beginning of the 10th century. There was then an earthquake, as a consequence of which the town was abandoned.
