Languages

Requirements
For British citizens, a passport valid for more than six months is enough, with proof of onward travel.

Religion
Roman Catholics make up almost half of the population while almost a third are Protestant.

Currency
The currency is the Belize Dollar (BZD). Large hotels and restaurants accept Visa and MasterCard payments, but these cards cannot be used to withdraw cash from ATM machines. Bring US Dollars (in cash or travellers cheques) as these can be used for payments and are easy to exchange in banks and bureaux de change. Banks open from 8:00am to 1:00pm from Monday to Thursday and until 4:30pm on Fridays.

Local transportation
Take domestic flights to save time and avoid travelling by road that can sometimes be difficult. There are scheduled flights from Belize City to the major destinations. A bus network also serves the whole country: this allows you to travel less expensively, however, the journeys (between 3 and 8 hours) are tiring. If you would like to hire a car, obtain an international licence, however you should be aware that the country only has two paved roads: the Northern Highway, that connects Belize City with the Mexican border, and the Western Highway, which goes from Belize City to the Guatemalan border.

Health
No particular vaccine required, but it is recommended to get shots for hepatitis A and B and to ensure that your other vaccinations are up to date. Only drink purified or bottled water. Take an anti malaria treatment if you are going into the jungle.

Electricity
110 V. You will need a universal adaptor.

Flood of tourists
In 2008, Belize welcomed 842,396 visitors.

Taxes and tips
Hotels apply a tax of 7%. In restaurants, service accounts for 10 % of the bill's total. It is not custom to leave a tip, except for luggage porters.
