As is the case with most villages in Bhutan, Paro developed around the dzong, in the middle of the 80s, and there is only one major shopping street. The town is therefore only worth seeing for its monasteries and its National Museum, which is housed in an old watchtower built in 1650. Don't miss a visit to the latter as it is an excellent introduction to the cultural wealth of the country and it is considered, moreover, as a ?temple' by the population since almost all of its objects have religious symbolism; from the works of art and the costumes to the painted banners and fabrics.
