Coming from Paro, just before you arrive in Thimpu, you will come across Simtokha Dzong (17th century), a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture that has miraculously been spared by the fires and natural disasters that continually damage the country's treasures. It is currently a centre for traditional studies, used to train the future teachers of Dzongkha, the official language of Bhutan, and visitors can admire the finely detailed statues at the premises.
