In the south, the plain which stops at the Himalayan foothills (5,576 ft) holds the tropical jungle and small towns, including the border-posts of Phuntsholing, Geylegphug and Samdrupjonkhar. This relatively slim belt rapidly gives way to increasingly steeper slopes covered in broad-leaved tree forests, and it is from here that you can penetrate into the Bhutanese sanctuary of monasteries, temples, and fortresses, particularly around Thimbu.
