In the Paro valley, the Kyichu Lhakhang temple complex is one of the first bastions of religion in the kingdom. Built on a promontory by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo, it dates from the 7th century, like the temple of Jokhang in Lhasa, Tibet. Its sanctuary holds one of the most sacred statues in the country, the Buddha at the age of eight.
