Thimbu

The capital of the country since the middle of the century, Thimbu has around 30,000 inhabitants. You should not expect the hustle and bustle of a capital city here, apart from during the weekly market. The market is good, but the shops in the main street are the best places in the country to buy your souvenirs. In addition to visiting the Painting School which transmits ancestral knowledge to the young generation, you can become initiated into traditional medicinal preparations by visiting the Institute of Medicine. The National Library should not be missed either, as it holds a collection of priceless old books, and you can also consult works on Buddhism there.
