Built on several levels, at 11,808ft high, La Paz is very colourful. From the top of its 19,680ft, the Illimani mountain seems to watch over the Bolivian capital. Its museums and markets, notably in calle Sagarnaga, are not to be missed. The Tiwanaku museum has a collection of remains from the Pre-Colombian period, and the National Art Museum devotes part of its rooms to contemporary Bolivian art. The San Francisco church is the most beautiful colonial building in La Paz. The town offers a rare opportunity for seeing two Bolivian realities together, today: on the one hand, the Indians who perpetuate their traditions, particularly in their colourful clothing, and on the other, the businessmen.
