Living in Bali, Taschen

Living in Bali, Taschen

A book that is easy to describe in a few words, 'Living in Bali' is at once evocative, rich, bright and colourful. But, this study of the houses and villas scattered across the Indonesian island is more than simply a series of pretty pictures, though Swiss photographer Reto Guntli certainly does deserve much credit for his spectacular, crisp-coloured images featured in the work.

Nevertheless, the book is also factual, educational and interesting and Anita Lococo should be recognized for her input, in the form of the accompanying text. Her writing appears in three languages (English, German and French) and is a hub of information on subjects like Balinese architecture, art and lifestyle.

'Living in Bali' has been called unapologetic in its approach. Undoubtedly, it announces its format unequivocally; it is a pictorial and textual study of Balinese residences, and does not masquerade as a guide.

One of the book's major successes is its representation of Bali's atmosphere and ambiance, indulgent yet peaceful, vivid and harmonious. It evokes this mood effortlessly, amongst wide open spaces and aesthetically-pleasing environments.

The pictures and text work side-by-side, simultaneously, to pay homage to this island of outstanding natural beauty, to its people and their homes.
