Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the largest city in the country, has been devastated by the three years of civil war. With time and a bit of luck, Sarajevo could become the magical city that it was before the war. It used to be the most oriental of the European cities, rich with Ottoman history introduced by the Turks during their 400 years occupation. The essence of the city is represented in its mosques, markets, and old bazaars. In respect to its more recent history, Sarajevo is known for being the place of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which provoked the First World War. Some parts of the city have not changed since then and for centuries Sarajevo was a place where Muslims, Serbs, Croats, Turks and Jews lived together in tolerance and pacific co-existence. However, a schism occurred, and we now patiently wait for a return to normality.
