Until the 1st and 2nd centuries BC, the San (for 30,000 years) and Khoi-Khoi (Hottentots) occupied the territory. During the course of the following centuries they lived peacefully with the Bantus.
1885, the English made Bechuanaland a British protectorate to stop the expansionist pretences of the Boers and Germans.
1965, Sir Seretse Khama becomes president.
1966, Botswana becomes independent on 30th September.
1967, the Botswanian economy, which was one of the poorest in the world, takes off, due to the discovery of diamond mines.
1980, death of Sir Seretse Khama; Sir Ketumile Masire then becomes president.
1998, Festus Mogae (Democratic Party of Botswana) comes to power.
2004. Re-election of Festus Mogae. 2008: Ian Khama elected as president.
