Belém, the capital of Pará, is a very culturally mixed town in the Amazon rainforest, situated at the mouth of the Amazon river, the biggest river in the world. The quiet old part of town features houses decorated with 'azulejos' tiles, colonial and baroque churches, and an Art Nouveau palace. It also includes the Cathedral of Sé, which was built by Antônio Landi in the 18th century. The Verr-O-Peso, the municipal market on the docks, is next to Guajará Bay. The praça de la Républica is surrounded by a shopping centre in the district of the same name.
