Brasilia has been the capital of the country since 1960, and its architecture is strikingly unique. The planning behind the city was very advanced for its time, and even described by some as futuristic. Brasilia's monuments are characterised by their pure lines, leading to the city's classification as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1987. Many architects, such as the likes of Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer were brought on board to help create what is presently known as the city of Brasilia.
