 Historical dates

1500, Pedro Alvares Cabral discovers Brazil. The Portuguese colonise it.
1822, Brazil becomes an empire with Peter 1st.
1888, abolition of slavery.
1889, creation of the federal Republic.
1937, Getúlio Vargas takes power, supported by the army.
1964, military coup d'Etat and power taken by the generals.
1985, return of civilian power, with José Sarney.
December 1989, first election by universal suffrage for 30 years, and victory by Fernando Collor.
October 1992, Collor resigns after trying, and failing, to stop impeachment trial. Itamar Franco succeeds him.
1995, the Social Democrat Fernando Henrique Cardoso becomes President.
1997, intensification of persecution of landless peasants by the big landowners in the interior of the country.
October 1998, Cardoso is re-elected.
October 2002, Lula Da Silva is elected President.
January 2005, the Rio State police create an escort service to prevent attacks on tourists between the airport and the city centre.
29 October 2006 : Lula is re-elected President for a 4 year mandate with 60% of votes. 2011, Lula is succeeded by his former Chief of Staff, Dilma Rousseff, the first woman to hold the office of president in Brazil.
