The city of Recife is in the state of Pernambouco. The Beberibe and Capiraribe rivers divide its centre into districts connected by bridges. Santo Antônio and São José belong to the old town. The Santo Antônio convent, which dates back to 1606, is worth seeing for the arches and azulejos tiling of its cloister. Capela Dourada, a small chapel, is easy to spot on account of its baroque exterior. Inside, it is entirely made up of cedar wood adorned with gold-leaf. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos and its superb high altar, the Igreja E Convento Nossa Senhora do Carmo and its baroque facade, and the Igreja Nossa Senhora da Conceição dos Militares are also worth a visit. In the modern town, the promenade and coconut trees of Avenida de Boa Viagem avenue stretch along the beachfront. This is where the restaurants, bars, and night clubs are concentrated. On the beach, you can rent a 'Jangada', a small pleasure boat.
