In Salvador, candomblé, a religion of African origin, is practised by the "povo de santo" (saintly people), and has some similarities to Haitian voodoo. It is not always easy to attend a traditional ceremony, but most of the halls perform ritual dances. Celebration of the harvests, the sun, Mother Earth, exorcism of plagues and war; all these aspects are evoked symbolically in specific processions.
