A few days before March 1st, various Bulgarian shops sell small braids of red and white thread calledmartenitza. The Bulgarians wear them from March 1st, on the back of their jackets, in a necklace or bracelet, to celebrate the end of the winter and the beginning of Spring. They keep them until the appearance of the first stork. On this day they hang their martenitza on a flowering fruit tree for it to be productive for the whole of the year. So, Chestita Baba Marta! ( Happy Grandma Marta !)
