The tree-covered Rhodopes The Rhodopes are a tree-covered massif © René Mattes
In the south of the country, the mountains of Rhodope, on the border with Greece, unfold vast pasture land crossed by rivers with crystalline waters, interrupted by magnificent forests of conifers and broad-leaved trees. In the isolated villages the Pomaks, Muslim Bulgarians, have maintained their musical traditions and coloured costumes. To see: the Trigrad gorges at the bottom of a breathtaking ravine. According to legend, it was in one of these grottoes that Orpheus penetrated into the kingdom of Hades to seek out his lovely Eurydice.
