68 miles away from Sofia, the monastery of Rila is in the hollow of the highest chain of mountains in the Balkans, and even in south-east Europe. Founded in the 10th century and classified as world heritage by UNESCO, it is without doubt the most famous in Bulgaria. This marvel, of which most of the buildings date from the 14th century, evokes a type of Tibetan fortress, with a splendid church and a rich historical museum. Frequented by numerous writers, Rila was an influential cultural centre. Its rich library has almost 32,000 works, of which more than 9,000 were written by hand.
