Rose Valley in Bulgaria Grown in the open air, the roses here will be used for industrial purposes. Ralph Braumer / age fotostock;
The Bulgarian production of roses is concentrated in the valley of the Roses located between the mountains of Mount Balkan and the chain of Sredna Gora, to the east of Sofia. From the end of May to the beginning of June, thousands of white, red or pink roses flower into the distance. On the first Sunday of June you should not miss: the Rose festival in Kazanluk, the occasion for several traditional events. You can visit the museum of the Rose all year round, together with the factories where rose oil is extracted. In the area, you can make a detour through Karlovo, the birthplace of Vassil Levski, the hero of the liberation from the Ottomans, and Koprivchtitsa, a real museum-town surrounded by bucolic countryside.
