Veliko Tarnovo, which was previously the capital of the second Bulgarian kingdom, is situated on three hills with steep slopes. The houses perched on top of each other there tumble down to the banks of the river Yantra. The main hill, Tszaravetz, forms an incredible stronghold surrounded by crenellated ramparts, within which is the royal palace, the patriarchate, and numerous churches. On summer evenings, the hill is lit up by a fantastic son et lumière. As well as the numerous churches and houses that the town has to visit, Veliko Tarnovo is also a good point of departure for visiting the region's monasteries and villages: Arbanassi, Preobajenski, Bojentsi, and Triavna
