History Burkina-Faso

August 5th 1960 : the country obtains its independence.
1966: Maurice Yaméogo, the President elected in 1959, is brought down
by the army which takes power, with Sangoulé Lamizana at its head.
1970 : new constitution. Universal suffrage for
the election of the President of the Republic is implemented.
1974: the army takes power again.
1977: military power is overthrown. Adoption of a
new constitution.
1978: General Lamizana is elected
President of the Republic. 1980 : military coup d'Etat.
Colonel Saye Zerbo becomes head of State.
1982:
the power is overthrown. Jean-Baptiste Ouedraogo takes power.
1983 : Thomas Sankara becomes President of Burkina
-Faso. The Citizen's Popular Rally (RPC) see the light.
1984: Upper Volta changes its name and becomes "Burkina
-Faso", literally the land of upright people.
October 15th
1987 : Thomas Sankara is assassinated.
1987: Blaise
Compaoré becomes head of the country after the coup d'Etat.
1991 :
a new constitution is adopted.
Blaise Compaoré becomes President of
Burkina-Faso.
1998: Blaise Compaoré is re-elected President.
