Located in the south of the country, Phnom Penh, the capital, still bears the stigma of many years of armed conflict, however, it has real charm. The whole of the district adjacent to the royal palace by the Mekong is particularly pleasant and the subject of considerable renovation efforts. Certain monuments of the royal palace are closed to the public. The silver pagoda, thus called because of its floor covered with more than 5,000 slabs of silver weighing more than 2 pounds each, is a jewel, and bears spectacular witness to the richness of the Khmer civilisation. Also see: the very lively area of the main market and the big adjacent boulevards where there are still a number of beautiful colonial residences, the "Russian market" district, and the Vat Phnom. According to legend, Vat Phnom is the hill surmounted by a pretty temple that symbolises the foundation of the town six centuries ago.
