Siem Reap (pronounced ciem rip) has the peaceful and languid pace of provincial life. It almost has the atmosphere of a large village, even though it has several thousands of inhabitants. You can lose yourself in its quiet streets bordered with wooden houses on piles without hesitation, and meet an often very friendly population. The main restaurants and bars are concentrated in the colonial buildings, which are well preserved, and adjacent to the market. Siem Reap now has its own international airport. You can easily imagine the consequences. The Siem Reap of tomorrow will no longer be the peaceful provincial town of yesterday. It is difficult not to touch on the close and sublime site of Angkor: Angkor Vat and Angkor Thom are some four miles from there. Which makes it impossible to miss Siem Reap the first time you travel to the country.
